public awareness: Interview with BayonTV
Summary of the Interview with BayonTV
Breast cancer is an emerging problem in Asia. As cities modernize and standards of living increase, we are observing a similar increase in incidence of breast cancer. Girls menstruating earlier, women having less children and at an older age, less breastfeeding, unhealthy diet, increased stress, obesity and lack of exercise are all contributing factors to increased breast cancer risk.
Fortunately treatment of breast cancer is becoming more sophisticated. Surgery is more refined and less mutilating. Multidisciplinary treatment including chemotherapy and radiotherapy means often surgery can be less extensive and the breast can be conserved. Even if the breast needs to be removed, options of immediate reconstruction are available to the patient. Sentinel lymph node biopsy also means the risk of arm swelling and weakness is reduced by avoiding routine lymph node clearance.
